There are times when you can go to a sporting event and find one thing fascinating.

As I entered the Hart Center Rink, home of the College of the Holy Cross Crusaders, I immediately saw the empty bench with my daughter working to prepare for the start of the game. My first two pictures set the tone for what would be my “photo adventure” for the game.

When I covered sports for publications, we always looked for out of the ordinary or behind the scenes that brought the reader/viewer a unique perspective of where we are. I’ve always been fascinated how every NHL team, and every bench down to nearly every level of hockey, has a row at the back of the bench so the coaches stand like “Gods on Olympus” looking down on their players. I know it’s simply so they can see, but I like the symbolism.

The Crusaders have become one of my “teams” because of the association with my daughter. Watching the players grow each season in confidence and ability is exhilarating. Last year, I witnessed Holy Cross’ Thomas Gale develop into a premier goaltender, earning a spot on the Mike Richter Award Watch List and Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Month in January 2025.

Head Coach Bill Riga is creating an elite program in Worcester. His team is growing stronger and he is creating leaders, not followers.

Since taking over the program on May 5, 2021, Riga has amassed an 84-78-12 record.

Two of last year’s players, Liam McLinskey and goalie Thomas Gale, both made the transition to the pros. These are the best and brightest players and you can watch them for the price of a McDonalds meal.
