Zodiacal light, Haleakala, 2019

By Mark D Phillips on August 25, 2022 in

The cone of light here is called the zodiacal light and is visible from very dark locations after sunset in the spring or before sunrise in the fall. Particles along the plane of our solar system illuminated by the sun produce this glow. The cone of light falls along the path of the zodiac constellations, or the ecliptic, the general path that the planets, the sun and moon take through our sky. It was remarkable to me that the zodiacal light could be seen above the bright lights of Maui. ©Stan Honda
