Squibb Park Bridge debacle has $3 MILLION price tag

Brooklyn Heights
DUMBO

The shortcut route to Brooklyn Bridge Park through Squibb Park has been closed for more than two years.

In that period, all the stories about the cost to fix the bridge have always said somewhere in the half-a-million dollar range.

So suddenly according to the Brooklyn Paper's report from the last BBP Board meeting:

"Brooklyn Bridge Park may have to shell out as much as $3.12 million to fix its long-shuttered Squibb Park Bridge — just $1 million less than it cost to build in the first place — and now a developer erecting condos in the park has done even more damage to the embattled span, park officials say."

Say what?????

Ok, we know this is a privately-run park, but who is overseeing anything that these guys do? So in the long run, these guys are spending $7 million dollars to build a footbridge? And they are going to run the finances forever? No wonder they want to build more condos in the park so they can waste even more money than they already have.

Don't get me wrong. I love the park. I just hate the management and the construction habits underway on our PUBLIC waterfront. The decision to even build the Pierhouse complex and allow the buildings to destroy the FREE view from the promenade shows that the BBG board doesn't give a crap about their neighbors. And now they finally admit that through the incompetence of the builders, even more damage was done to the Squibb Bridge, to the tune of $790,000. Do we really think Toll Brothers will pay that full amount? I'll be surprised to see that in print.

According to the story, park officials say the span will reopen in spring 2017. Don't hold your breath.
