SPRING/BREAK Art Show
MINUS SPACE goes to Manhattan to present Vincent Como / into memory, curated by Annie Wischmeyer, Claire Bergeal, and Sarah Guittar, for the upcoming SPRING/BREAK Art Show from March 1 - 6, 2017.
Inspired by this year's theme of "Black Mirror", the three curators will mount an abbreviated retrospective of gallery artist Vincent Como's work spanning the past two decades.
4.5 Cubic Inches (Volume of the Inside of My Head), 2007
Cast Sumi Ink
4.5 x 4.5 x 4.5 inches / 11.5 x 11.5 x 11.5 cm
About his work, curators Wischmeyer, Bergeal, and Guittar write:
"In 2007, Vincent Como cast the volume of his brain in Sumi ink. 4.5 Cubic Inches (Volume of the Inside of My Head) is an abstract, even conceptual self-portrait in that it reflects the artist's commitment to his restrictive palette. Though the color often symbolizes ambiguity, secrecy, and the unknown, it also has the capacity to provide clarity through reflectivity.
into memory is a tightly curated selection of works that covers the breadth of Como's oeuvre. Using his 4.5 Cubic Inches (Volume of the Inside of My Head) as a catalyst and surrogate self-portrait, the presentation traces several bodies of work beginning with his early artist's book of all black drypoint prints, Untitled (Black Book), of the late 1990s and follows the artist's path into the present day. Each work marks not only a critical shift in Como's conceptual trajectory, but also a distinct acknowledgement of his formal and theoretical origins."

SPRING/BREAK Art Show is an internationally recognized exhibition platform using underused historic New York City spaces to activate and challenge the traditional cultural landscape of the art market, typically but not exclusively during Armory Arts Week. The sixth annual fair will be held from February 28th – March 6th, 2017 in our new location at 4 Times Square.
By first inhabiting St. Patrick's Old School, and then the former James A. Farley Post Office, the initiative offers independent curators free space within New York City landmarks. In exchange for no-cost exhibition space, visionaries both established and unknown are charged with activating these non-traditional areas under a unifying theme and pushed to extend the boundries of typical market week practices, low overhead and shifting curatorial themes their assets to this end.
All artworks in the show are displayed and available for purchase online, giving artists unknown, emerging, mid-career, and beyond a virtual compliment to their tactile exhibition. In 2017 over 150 curators will premiere new artworks created by over 400 artists, all selected around this year’s central art theme, BLACK MIRROR.
